Tom Airey was brought up on racing cars in the
sixties and seventies.
Tom was an ardent auto- and rally-crosser, driving a self-tuned mini on SU carburettors. Tom's brother, Bill, competed in a Ford Anglia on twin Webers.
In the early 60's, Tom and Bill took their cars to a rolling road, one of very few around then, for a tune-up, but came away disappointed, with their cars underperforming compared to their
own pre-tuned set-up.
Convinced they could do better, it was not long before a rolling road was purchased and installed and the Airey Tuning Company was born!
It was not too long before a reputation for superb tuning and reliability was earned, confirmed by further successes in racing championships by cars tuned by Tom Airey - from overall 2-day winner at the 1972 ATV National Rallypoint at Long Merton, to a 2-class and overall SEGTO Autocross win in 1997.
The rolling road saw sterling work carried out at the Crossroads Garage in Cheriton for many years, but in 1989 it was moved to it's current location - in purpose built premises at the Airey family home in Bramdean where it continues to get the best out of cars under the expert hands of Tom Airey.
Current successes are being
shown by a FIA lightweight 3.8l E-Type Jaguar. This car has
been set up to great effect by Tom Airey for its owner, John
Markey, and has finished 4th in the Le mans Classic.
Recently, the Jag finished 1st in class (3rd overall) in the
Spar 6-Hour race in October 2006 while being driven by
Richard Attwood, Steven Markey and Austin Kinsella. The car
itself was initially built and prepared by Rob Stacey, who
currently has two more in build.
Recent work at Airey Tuning has seen the
arrival of the pair of Alvis motorcars owned by Idris Francis, one a
1938 3.5l, and the other a 1939 4.3l
